Sciatica Pain Relief Starts Here!

Chiropractic Help Can Stop Your Sciatica Suffering.

Emergency room doctors say that sciatica is one of the most common conditions they encounter each year. Millions of people in America will suffer with the pain of sciatica, many never achieving a long term solution. Their problem continues to worsen because they are not receiving the right medical treatment. Patients often describe the pain of sciatica being anywhere from a slight discomfort to an extremely unbearable pain. Over time people tend to go through periods of pain that typically intensifies if the problem goes unchecked.

How Can Dr. Cosmas Leigh Help with Sciatica Pain Relief?

Sciatica pain relief starts with a diagnosis from Dr. Leigh followed by a non-medication treatment plan specifically for your condition. Dr. Leigh is able to localize and break down adhesions using his hands. Reducing the adhesions will restore normal strength, flexibility, and movement, eliminating pain and improving muscle performance. If needed, Dr Leigh may even recommend spinal decompression.

How Can the DRX9000C Relieve my Sciatica Pain?

Chapel Hill’s Chiropractor, Dr. Cosmas Leigh is dedicated to providing the most cutting-edge, state-of-the-art, non-invasive care possible for his patients. Dr. Leigh is the only Chiropractic Physician in the Chapel Hill-Durham area using a DRX9000C for spinal adjustments or manipulation which provides sciatica pain relief. This spinal decompression medical device is an alternative, non-medicinal approach toward providing fast pain relief for a wide variety of chronic issues you may be experiencing. The DRX9000C is designed to reduce and eliminate pressure between the spinal discs. As both the vertebrae and spine are separated, pressure is slowly reduced within the disc creating a small vacuum forcing the gelatin center of the spinal disc back into its natural position. The DRX9000C also helps pull much-needed nutrients, both oxygen and fluid, back into the degenerated discs allowing proper therapeutic healing to begin.

What is Involved in a DRX9000C Sciatica Treatment?

During treatment for sciatica, the patient is secured and positioned on the table with an arm support, belt, and a vest to prevent the body from sliding. The duration of the treatment, the pull weight, and the decompressing angle are entered into a computer which calculates a slow progression and maximum pull while alternating between an extension and relaxing state. Spinal manipulation with the DRX9000C may be coupled cold therapy to help reduce inflammation where applicable. An average sciatica treatment lasts about three to four treatments for about a 20 to 30 minute duration each time.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is caused when the roots of the lower lumbar and lumbosacral spine become irritated by a number of conditions including spinal stenosisdegenerative disc disease, a herniated disc, isthmic spondylolisthesis, piriformis syndrome, Sacroiliac joint dysfunction muscle spasms, and pregnancy. More rarely, the nerve can be compressed by a tumor or damaged by a disease such as diabetes or even just by being overweight. While the pain caused by sciatica can be severe, it can also be infrequent and irritating. Without proper therapy, the pain has the potential to get worse over time.

What Are The Symptoms of Sciatica?

Often the pain associated with sciatica will originate in the spine but can radiate downward into the back and legs. The most common symptoms of sciatica include what is listed below:

  • Hip Pain
  • Tingling or burning throughout the leg
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Shooting pains that make it difficult to stand
  • Numbness or difficulty moving a leg or foot
  • Weakness in the knees

If you or a loved one are experiencing one or more of the sciatica symptoms listed above, call Dr. Leigh today at (919) 401-9933 for a consultation to discover what your treatment options are.

How is sciatica diagnosed?

The diagnosis of sciatica does not need to be difficult, a review of symptoms, a quick physical examination, and a review of the patients’ medical history can often diagnose sciatica and its root cause. Determining the root cause will allow Dr. Leigh to determine the best solution for you. Depending on the severity of your condition, other diagnostic tests might be performed. Other sciatica diagnoses tests may include:

  • X-ray’s to find spinal fractures
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Electromyography to determine how well electrical impulses travel through the sciatic nerve
  • Myelogram where a dye is injected between the vertebrae to determine if the pain is in the vertebra or disc.

Most sciatica patients are treated without the need for further diagnostic testing.

Where Does Sciatica Start?

Sciatica usually starts at the pelvic and lumbar spinal areas. Dr. Cosmas Leigh will be able to work with you to determine the exact source of your sciatica and the best way to improve the position of the spine and discs to relieve your pain.

Some patients say all they did was bend over to pick up a pencil, before being hit with extreme pain. Most people do not realize how an easy task can cause them so much pain. The truth is their condition has been developing over years like most spinal problems. That pencil just happened to be the last straw.

How Long Does it Take to Correct Sciatica?

Sciatica treatment length may vary from patient to patient. Some patients respond very quickly while others require more time for recovery. Recovery depends on the condition of the disc or the joints that need to be corrected. In most cases, the longer the issue persists, the longer it will take to achieve correction. The great news is typically it takes far less time to fix an issue like sciatica than it took to create it.

Chiropractors FAQ

Do Chiropractors adjust all patients the same way?

No. The chiropractor evaluates each patient’s unique spinal problem and develops an individual course of care. In fact, there are many different chiropractic techniques and the chiropractor will decide which is best for each patient. The recommendations made by a chiropractor are based upon years of training and experience. Each patient’s care is uniquely different from every other patient.

Can a person who had back surgery see a chiropractor?

Yes. It’s an unfortunate fact that up to half of those who had spinal surgery discover a return of their original symptoms months or years later. They then face the prospect of additional surgery. This too common occurrence is known as “Failed Back Surgery Syndrome.” Chiropractors may help prevent repeated back surgeries. In fact, if chiropractic care is initially utilized back surgery can often be avoided in the first place. Some chiropractors specialize in serving those people who have had previous back surgeries and are still in pain. Spinal Decompression Therapy can be the most effective course of treatment for such a person.

Can I adjust myself?

No. Since a chiropractic adjustment is a specific force, applied in a specific direction to a specific joint, it is virtually impossible to adjust oneself correctly and accurately. It is possible to turn or bend or twist in certain ways to create a “popping” sound that sometimes accompanies a chiropractic adjustment. Unfortunately, this type of joint manipulation is usually counterproductive, often making an already unstable spine even more unstable, and can sometimes be dangerous. Adjusting the spine is not for amateurs.

Can I tell if my spine is out of alignment?

Not always. A misalignment is like a dental cavity–you may have it for a long time before symptoms appear. That’s why periodic spinal checkups are so important. Although it may be possible to know you have a misalignment, it is rarely possible to be sure you don’t. Regular spinal checkups are always a good idea, and they promote good health from the inside out.
